The collaboration between tech startup Kuva Space and the Finnish Environmental Institute (Skye) is introducing a specialized satellite equipped with hyperspectral sensors to analyze water health from space.

The potential impact of this technology is profound. Traditional methods for monitoring algal blooms, primarily relying on water samples, are time-consuming and expensive. Recognizing this limitation, Kuva and Skye are employing artificial intelligence (AI) alongside hyperspectral imagery. This approach will facilitate the identification of toxic cyanobacteria — or blue-green algae — which, in high concentrations, can pose serious health risks to both humans and aquatic life.

Insights into Algal Blooms: The Role of AI

Kuva's innovative pilot project aims to not only detect the presence of dangerous algae but also to identify the specific species involved and assess their biomass. The partnership is driven by the capabilities of AI, which will continuously refine its accuracy through machine learning as it processes hyperspectral data and correlates it with biochemical research.

By 2030, Kuva Space plans to have 100 satellites operating in orbit, sending back valuable data on our planet’s natural and manmade materials.
